Dancing in the moment

Thinking on your feet is a key factor in being a successful coach. Dancing in the moment allows greater flexibility of coaching style and a personalised response to what emerges in a coaching session.

A good metaphor for this is freestyle dancing, where the dancer has prior knowledge and experience of steps and moves and so can put these together when the right moment presents itself in the music. Dancing in the moment requires a certain level of confidence, knowing that you can draw upon the right coaching tool, model or approach without having planned it an advance. As with any skill, ease and fluidity develops with practice. The best way to
sabotage dancing in the moment is to plan the detail of coaching sessions in advance. Avoid turning up with pre-conceived ideas of how the coaching session should progress. Avoid giving priority to structure and your agenda. Trust and intuition will enable the coach to dance in the moment, with acceptance that until the client starts talking, the coach will have little idea of how the coaching could progress.

Willingness to move is important for both the coach and client. Each moment in coaching can be seen as an opportunity to move – for your client it may be towards new learning, new goals, new solutions, new insights and so on. If the client becomes stuck, the role of the coach is to direct the next step with a question or reflective observation. If the coach, becomes stuck (what to say next), improvise or pause and reflect, in order to allow the next step to come to mind.
