Being - A-Z of Coaching & Mentoring

A - Z Coaching and Mentoring - This week's extract highlights the importance of 'Being' as a coach.

Don't forget if you have a special request for a definition of a coaching term or principle, just let us know! Perfect for anyone studying for an ILM Coaching & Mentoring qualification, or as a refresher for experienced coaches.

Coaching is about helping someone else to learn – without telling them what to do or what to think. The idea is that the person being coached comes up with all the ideas and decisions. As a result, coaching helps people reach their full potential, by helping them to unlock their thinking and remove barriers. Being is the opposite of doing. In a state of being and a quiet mind coaches will be better at avoiding advising, guiding, resolving, leading, suggesting.

A good question for a coach to ask themselves is ‘what is my ‘being’ that will enable my use of tools and techniques (the doing) to support the client in the best way possible?’.

Being present is often described as the best state for coaching, where the coach is able to focus on the conversation and the client, their mind is clear of
distractions and they’re not trying to ‘do’ too much.  Being present allows the coach to better engage with listening skills and notice what their client is thinking and feeling, as well as saying.
