I left the Army early in 2011 as a two star on the Army Board. I completed the Corporate Governance week as part of my CTP, as this was the most appropriate course before taking up my new role as CEO of The Portman Estate. 

The estate is one of the largest property companies in London. I stood down as CEO in 2018 after nearly 7 years. During my time as CEO I brought in two Executive Coaches to work with our directors and executive team. I was so impressed by the results that I embarked on the ILM Level 7 course with Inspired2learn, a course which I am shortly due to complete. I now run my own coaching, leadership development and consulting business.

The coaching qualifications are a natural extension of all the we do in the military. There is no doubt that the military’s leadership development and man management skills give the military a head start over most of our civilian counterparts. This is certainly the case from my perspective as the previous CEO of the Portman Estate. In the military we coach and mentor our teams on a regular basis, and this is a great foundation from which to start more formal coaching qualifications.

More and more businesses are employing coaches, whether internally or from an external coaching firm. A coaching qualification as part of the transition out of the Forces would provide a helpful introduction to the commercial world and where no commercial experience is required. As coaches gather more knowledge, they would have the potential to coach at board and senior leader level. A coaching qualification when combined with already present leadership development skills would add value to any business.

Inspired2learn provides a terrific service. They are very supportive and always offer just too much for you to absorb, but only just - so you strive to stay up with them. I attend many courses with various other providers. Other students on the same course as me but with different providers do not receive anywhere near the tuition, help and support that I enjoy. Our tutor (and supervisor) is challenging, responsive, supportive and a terrific fount of knowledge. Our whole course has learned a huge amount from her. That she does it in a fun and relaxed manner makes her tuition enjoyable and rewarding.
