A - Z Coaching and Mentoring - This week's extract explores the Johari Window technique which helps people better understand themselves and their relationships.

Don't forget if you have a special request for a definition of a coaching term or principle, just let us know! Perfect for anyone studying for an ILM Coaching & Mentoring qualification, or as a refresher for experienced coaches.

Johari Window (Luft and Ingham 1955) is a popular technique to help people better understand themselves and their relationships. Self assessment questionnaires are available and provide a subjective map of personality awareness. The model has wide applications for personal and team coaching.

  • Open – the area of honest and open communication - make this area as large as possible for more effective relationships and better team work ?
  • Hidden – reduce this area by disclosing information about yourself e.g. small things that show your vulnerability and build trust or things that help others to understand you better ?
  • Blind – reduce this area by seeking and receiving feedback ?
  • Unknown – what potential do you have? Are you in denial about anything?
