Goal map is a visual pattern or Mind Map®. It is a divergent thinking tool that emerged from Tony Buzan’s work on psychology and creative thinking. Visual maps are used for generating and recording ideas in a way that mirrors how the brain stores and retrieves information. Each line from the goal in centre of the diagram represents a new idea and extra detail can branch off into sub sections.

A goal map can be simple or complex. The visual element is important because the outside world is represented in the mind by mental images rather than words (Pinker 1999). The best maps will include pictures and doodles to illustrate the words and ideas being used. The key words in a goal map are used to trigger images in a person’s neurology. The structure of a map shows the associations between words and pictures, mirroring the logic of the brain.
