Emotional Intelligence

A - Z Coaching and Mentoring - This week's extract from Clare Smale's book highlights 'Emotional Intelligence' in the contact of coaching.

Don't forget if you have a special request for a definition of a coaching term or principle, just let us know! Perfect for anyone studying for an ILM Coaching & Mentoring qualification, or as a refresher for experienced coaches.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise emotions and manage them effectively. Daniel Goleman (1996) identified the five 'domains' of emotional intelligence as:

  1. Knowing your emotions
  2. Managing your own emotions
  3. Motivating yourself
  4. Recognising and understanding the emotions of others
  5. Managing relationships, i.e. managing the emotions of others.

Coaches manage their own emotional intelligence in service of their clients and seek continuous improvement. They are then be able to model the behaviours they are seeking to develop in their clients. Coaching can support clients to explore the impact they have on others at work, home or in another aspect of their life.

Taken from the A-Z Coaching Handbook by Clare M Smale where you will find a comprehensive A-Z, plus a full list of references.
