A – Z Coaching and Mentoring – This week’s extract showcases ‘Well-formed outcome’ – a goal setting structure that assists with mental creation of a goal and presuppose success.

Well-formed outcome (Bandler & Grinder 1989) is a goal setting structure. Here are the well-formed outcome questions:

  • What do you want to see, hear and feel?
  • Where do you want this?
  • When do you want this?
  • Who with?
  • How will you know when you’ve got it?
  • What will you see, hear and feel?
  • What resources will you need?

The questions should be repeated as many times as possible in order to discover the widest range of possibilities. The best results come from using the questions without any adjustments. The questions are designed to have linguistic patterns that firstly assist with the mental creation of a goal and secondly, presuppose success.

The seven questions create an overall representation of a goal that will have increased detail, substance and motivation. It will be well-formed. These questions are useful for a quick coaching session or can be considered by the client for an hour or more.
