A - Z Coaching and Mentoring - This week's extract explores Values - their importance in determining attitudes and opinions and being a powerful motivating driver for goals as well as defining the difference between values and beliefs.
Values are an energising and motivating force. Values give goals deep-rooted meaning, so the client will be less likely to give up and be more likely to break through barriers or overcome obstacles and potential failures. For many people, values will surface as a gut instinct or their heart will tell them it’s the right way to be going.
Values and beliefs are two terms which are often used as meaning the same thing. They are different concepts and are mutually supportive.
- Values are ideals that we hold to be important and they govern the way we behave, communicate and interact with others.
- Beliefs are more precise concepts that we hold to be true and they are a bit like rules that we set for ourselves.
For example, you might have a strong value around the importance of family in your life and then within this higher ideal or principle, you might have beliefs (rules) about how to achieve this, such as eating together at mealtimes, attending family celebrations whenever it’s possible and having a holiday together every year.
Values and beliefs determine attitudes and opinions and they are a powerful motivating driver for goals. Values can be inspiring and can also help inform clients about decisions and choices they need or want to make in their lives.
