A - Z Coaching and Mentoring - This week's extract showcases Transactional Analysis - the model of communication which is useful for examining the boundaries of the coaching relationship and supporting the client to explore their relationships, dilemmas, issues and goals.

Tt

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a model of communication (Berne 1964) based on adult, parent and child relationships (the three ego states). Berne stated that an ego state is a way of us experiencing the world. It’s a way of understanding how we relate to ourselves and others.

The three ego states are:

  • Parent – assert control, nurture, create dependency
  • Adult – the best role for the coach
  • Child – looking for sympathy, admiration, seeking attention

The coach and the client can both recognise their own patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour using this model, so it is useful for examining the boundaries of the coaching relationship (contracting) and the behaviours within it, as well as for supporting the client to explore their relationships, dilemmas, issues and goals.

TA has three core principles:

  • Everyone is OK – this is a position of respect and regard for self and others
  • Everyone can think and therefore find solutions to problems
  • Anyone can change

Taken from the A-Z Coaching Handbook by Clare Smale where you will find a comprehensive A-Z, plus a full list of references.
