Profiling tools - A-Z of Coaching & Mentoring

A - Z Coaching and Mentoring - This week's extract explores 'Profiling tools' and their usefulness in opening up conversations about your client’s current behaviours and attitudes and how effective these are in supporting the goal or changes that your client wants.

Profiling tools (also known as psychometrics) have been developed to measure and label learning styles, aptitude, ability, behaviour and personality. Some of these are designed for individuals, some for teams and a few can be used with both very effectively. Below is an A-Z list of some of the assessment tools most widely used by coaches:

  • DISC
  • Emotional Quotient Inventory
  • FIRO-B
  • Hay Leadership Styles
  • Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument
  • Insights Discovery
  • Kolb’s learning styles
  • MiRo behavioural modes
  • Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
  • Saville Wave
  • Sixteen Personality Factors (16PF)
  • Strengths Deployment Inventory (SDI)
  • TetraMap

Results are reported to clients numerically, graphically, by colour or through pictures, and in varying degrees of written analytical detail.

The cost also varies, with shortened or trial versions being available free on line for a few, whilst most require the coach to be licensed to run the profiling tool and give feedback. All are very useful in opening up a conversation about the client’s current behaviours and attitudes (individual or team) and how effective these are in supporting the goal or changes that the client wants.
